That's the appeal in one sentence: the mafia setting hands a romance stakes that a contemporary office or a college campus can't manufacture on its own, because the people around the couple can and will kill over what they're doing.

What counts here
Three rules:
- Organised crime has to be structural, not decorative. A family, a code, a hierarchy that outlasts any one character. A single mob-adjacent villain in an otherwise ordinary romance doesn't qualify.
- Content stated honestly. This shelf carries violence, dubious consent and BDSM more often than not, and burying that in the blurb rather than the book's own fields is how a reader ends up somewhere they didn't choose to be.
- Heat and ending stated for every book, including where the ending is a cliffhanger rather than a resolution, because this trope leans on duets and trilogies more than most.

How dark does this shelf actually run?
Wide range, and the fields below say where each book sits rather than assuming "mafia" means one thing. Petrichor is grumpy sunshine with a lingerie shop owner in the mix. Ghost opens with BDSM, knife and blood play stated as part of what the two leads want, not imposed on them. Take Me Apart and He Is Poison carry abuse and graphic violence as part of the world rather than a passing scene. None of that is a flaw in the trope; it's the reason to check the fields before starting rather than after.
