Australian MM romance
There's plenty of Australian MM romance. Finding it's the hard part, because nobody has put it in one place.
So here it is. Every Australian MM author I can vouch is actually Australian, where to start with each one, and the one gap nobody has filled.

What this page covers
Two different questions get asked here, and the answer to one isn't the answer to the other, so the page is in three parts:
- Australian authors with Australian settings. Both at once, which is the combination you can't search for and the reason this page exists.
- Australian authors writing somewhere else. Captive Prince is a secondary world and Puckboys is the NHL, and dropping them would be answering a different question.
- Australian settings by authors who aren't. Some of the best-known Australian-set MM was written a long way from here.
- Heat and ending on every book, and the section a book sits in tells you which of the three you're getting.
What the heat ratings mean
The five point scale romance readers already use, lowest to highest. Every book below is marked on it.
- Glimpses and kisses a kiss at most, and no sex on or off the page
- Behind closed doors it happens, but the door shuts first
- Open door at least one scene you are in the room for, written without the explicit words
- Explicit open door two or more scenes, explicit, and a range of things happening
- Explicit and plentiful several explicit scenes spread through the book
Why are Australian MM romance authors so hard to find?
Australian romance means rural MF romance. Vets, droughts, someone moving back to the farm. It's a proper industry with its own awards and its own shelf in Big W. MM was never part of it.
So Australian MM authors publish independently, and the market sorts by trope, not by country. You can browse small town romance or enemies to lovers. You can't browse Australian.

Red Dirt Heart
AboutCharlie Sutton runs a cattle station the way his father did and keeps his head down about everything else. Travis Craig turns up from America to study how anyone farms country like that. The outback book most readers arrive at first, and the one everything else gets compared to.
Read it ifYou want the outback done properly, slow and quiet, and you're happy to commit to a four-book arc for the full payoff.
DifferentWalker has more than ninety books and not all of them are set here, so this is the Australian one to start with rather than a general entry point to her. The Weight of It All is her most-read by some distance, over 11,000 ratings, and it's Brisbane.

AboutWilliam Holt is a free man with a convict's past, hired to guide an English heir six weeks west over the mountains and out past Bathurst. He recognises George Ashford the first night at the inn. George doesn't recognise him at all. Six weeks of open country with nowhere to look but at each other, and they're sleeping together long before they reach the station.
Read it ifYou want a historical that hurts, and an Australia that's the country rather than a backdrop.
DifferentIt's slow, and the whole book rests on one man knowing something the other does not, so if dramatic irony makes you want to shake somebody this is a long six weeks. Reader notes are on the book page if you want them first.

AboutMelbourne, 2001, and two outlaw motorcycle clubs are the better part of a year into a war. Nick Reid and Aleksandar Hunt find each other in a St Kilda nightclub, where neither of them has to be what he is during the week. The sex is easy. What it turns into isn't, and neither of them knows yet which side the other one is on.
Read it ifYou want a real Australian city with a real decade behind it, and enemies to lovers where the two of them are the last to work out that's what they are.
DifferentNick hurts people for a living and you watch him do it. It's organised crime rather than a book about the people inside a club, and closer to a thriller than to a romance about a community. Club violence throughout. Reader notes are on the book page if you want them first.

Two Man Station
AboutGio Valeri is transferred out of city policing to Richmond, where the station has two officers in it and he is one of them. What the book is good on is the parts that aren't the romance: the distances, the boredom, the way everyone already knows.
Read it ifYou want small town Australia written by someone who lives in one, and you like a romance that takes its time getting started.
DifferentSlow, and deliberately so. The policing and Gio's situation get as much room as the relationship, so if you want the romance centred from page one this will feel like it's holding out on you. Henry was a LAMBDA finalist for Adulting 101, which is a very different book to this one.

AboutLiam does the numbers for a mining company and catches the same Perth train every morning, where the same blond bloke is always dancing to something. A car crash at sixteen left him with a limp and a fear of driving. He has decided the limp is why he isn't much of a man, and Jay is about to give him a second thing to be frightened of.
Read it ifYou want warm and funny rather than fraught, and a coming-out story that isn't going to hurt.
DifferentLighter than most of what's here. That's the point of it, not a shortfall. If you want Kaye at her most Australian, The Shearing Gun is the one, a closeted shearer in Western Australia, and it rates higher than this does.

Read it ifYou want Melbourne rather than the outback, and a romance where the obstacle is mental illness and circumstance rather than anybody being closeted.
DifferentWritten in 2009 and reads it. The pacing lurches, slow in long stretches and then suddenly quick, and even readers who love it say so. Melbourne here is an insider's city rather than a postcard of one.

AboutDave Taylor guides tours through the Queensland outback and takes a job leading an Englishman who is looking for a butterfly that may not exist. Two men, a ute and a very long way from anywhere.
Read it ifYou want the outback and a quiet, gentle book, and you don't need much to happen.
DifferentGentle, and short on external conflict, which is the appeal for some readers and the complaint for others. The sharper criticism is the heat. The prose is lovely and it holds you at arm's length in the scenes meant to be close.

AboutA former SAS officer and an assassin strike a bargain and run from mercenaries across the desert. Australian, and nothing like a small-town romance.
Read it ifYou want the thriller to be a real thriller, with the romance running through it rather than over it.
DifferentAction thriller with a romance in it rather than the other way round, and the plotting is dense. If you want the relationship centred throughout, this isn't it.

AboutDeclan Tyler plays Australian rules football and can't be out. Simon Murray runs a film festival and has no such problem. The closet in it isn't invented for the plot. It's the one the sport actually had, and still has.
Read it ifYou want it funny, you want the footy, and you'd rather follow one couple across four books than watch them get together and stop.

Forward Entry
AboutNoah Walker plays key forward for the Sydney Swallows and is out. Bryce Monaghan captains the rival Sydney club, thinks he's straight, and asks Noah to be his experiment. Noah says yes, with one rule for himself: don't fall in love.
Read it ifYou want high heat, the two of them on clubs that play each other, and a bi-awakening with no shame in it.
DifferentTwo Sydney clubs playing each other, so the football is the obstacle rather than the setting. Sold as low angst and it mostly is, though there's still a third act break up.

AboutNorth Underwood and Will Tanner have been friends since kindergarten and sleeping together since they were seventeen. North has spent ten years calling himself straight about it. Red Maine isn't a town that leaves that alone once it notices.
Read it ifYou want the small town to be hostile rather than cosy, and you can take a lead who is cruel to the man he loves while he works himself out.
DifferentThe homophobia is the plot rather than the backdrop and it gets physical, so it's a hard read. The HEA arrives quickly once it does, which several readers wanted more of.

Unexpected Mate
AboutBrian Townsend gets rejected by his parents and thrown out of his pack in the same week. Then his car dies on the road south. The cop who turns up to the call-out is Marcus Holland, and Brian knows on sight that Marcus is the wolf he's fated to. Marcus has just broken up with his girlfriend and has never once thought about a man. He walks off without looking back.
Read it ifYou want shifters and fated mates without much angst, and an Australian pack rather than an American one.
DifferentTwo things get set up hard at the start: his family throwing him out, and Marcus walking away. Both resolve faster than the opening leads you to expect, because this is low angst rather than the kind of book that sits in it. If you want the rejection to cost somebody something, it isn't this one.

AboutMatthew Ottenshaw arrives in Dinbratten as its new Anglican priest, his first posting. Jonah Parks is the police sergeant. The two of them end up running the town between them, and a bushfire and one reckless kiss turn it into the thing neither of them can afford.
Read it ifYou want a historical that's Australian without being convicts, and a country town rather than a frontier.
DifferentThe threat is neighbours and gossip rather than distance, so it's a quieter book than the outback historicals and a tenser one.

AboutCol Langdon is posted from New York to Sydney for an agricultural finance job. The first thing Australia gives him is a drunk man singing badly outside his hotel at night. That's Wilby Linfox, a vet from a long way further out than Sydney.
Read it ifYou want it funny and warm, you want the distance to be the actual problem, and you don't want to be wrecked.
DifferentThe obstacle is geography rather than anyone's feelings, which is unusual and is why it stays low angst. It's the Australian arm of a series set elsewhere, so the vets here are new people.

Playing It Safe
AboutDonovan Bane is thirty-two, plays for the Sydney Smoke and has a daughter. He plans to stay closeted until his career ends, because he would rather be known for his footy than for being the first out active pro rugby player in the country. Beckett Stanton is out and has dated a closeted man once already. He has just started working for the club.
Read it ifYou want the code the AFL books don't cover, and a closeted-athlete story where the career is genuinely on the line.
DifferentAndrews has around ninety romances behind her and this was her first MM. The writing shows the experience. The obstacle between them doesn't: they like each other early, and the reasons they can't get on with it start feeling arranged. Beck works for the club Donovan plays for, so there's a workplace problem on top of the closet one.

AboutCallen Blackheath is a wolf shifter and works for the Supernatural Investigation and Crime Bureau. His boss has told him to stay off this job. He stays on it, because the last family he has left is caught up in the blood farms he is trying to shut down. Then Liam Thatcher, who runs the task force, gets bitten, and lands in the middle of Callen's world.
Read it ifYou want a shifter book that's also a police case, and you want it set here.
DifferentUrban fantasy first and romance second, and the world arrives in asides rather than on the page: vampires exist, that man is a lion shifter, and on it goes. The case takes more room than the couple. The Australia here is the language and the humour rather than a city you could name, so if you want somewhere you can picture, it isn't that.

Fishy Riot
AboutTaylor Jameson is a riot squad officer with a reputation for not caring and a family who won't stay out of his life. A political rally on a harbour ferry goes wrong. Sietta Salisbury is caught up in it: a politician's son, and a musician everyone believes is dead. Looking into him turns into prisoners, politics, and somebody trying to kill them.
Read it ifYou want a crime plot with something odd running underneath it, and you'd rather work it out than be told.
DifferentNeither the blurb nor the first stretch of the book will tell you what Sietta actually is. That's deliberate and it will irritate you if you want your premise up front.

Awfully Ambrose
AboutAmbrose Newman is paid to be the worse option. A client whose parents hate their boyfriend hires him for the evening, and the parents go home grateful for the boyfriend they started with. He is working one of those jobs at the restaurant where Liam waits tables when it ends in broken glass. Liam then hires him for the opposite job: look like a boyfriend worth keeping. Ambrose is too good at it, and Liam's parents invite them both up to the family winery for the long weekend.
Read it ifYou want fake dating done funny, and a family that turns out to be on their side.
DifferentAmbrose switches between the awful version of himself and the real one without much signposting, so it takes a while to work out which one is on. Light the whole way through, so if you want the fake relationship to cost either of them something, it doesn't.

Leather+Lace
AboutSteve got out of an abusive relationship four years ago and went to England to do it. He's back to reclaim the house he walked away from. He goes to a charity night in drag as Stevie Nicks so his ex won't know him. His ex doesn't turn up. Donato Rossi does, and the two of them have to work out how their pasts are tied together.
Read it ifYou want kink written by somebody who takes it seriously, and a city rather than a paddock.
DifferentThe kink is the subject rather than the decoration: how a full-time power exchange works, and how it stops working when consent gets thin. There are fewer scenes than the premise promises. One point of view throughout, so Don stays partly shut to you on purpose. Sydney here is the one you'd pass through rather than the postcard.

Australian authors writing somewhere else
Australian, and set nowhere near it. They're here because a page about Australian authors that dropped them for writing elsewhere would be answering a different question, and because the alternative is letting a reader assume.
Without You is the one that had been assumed. It sat above with no country on it and is set in Montana and Seattle.
Captive Prince
AboutDamen is heir to the throne of Akielos until his half-brother has him sold as a slave to Prince Laurent of Vere, the country that killed his brother. Laurent has no idea who he has been handed.
Read it ifYou want the MM fantasy everybody else has read, and you can take a first book that spends most of its length with the two of them wanting each other dead.
DifferentDamen is a slave for the whole book and the early chapters are as bad as that sounds. Book one also has no romance ending. It stops at the point they stop being enemies, so if you want a resolution you're reading three books rather than one.
SettingAkielos and Vere, a secondary world

A Marvellous Light
AboutA clerical error hands Robin Blyth a minor government post that turns out to be liaison to a secret magical society nobody warned him about. Somebody curses him for it within days. Edwin Courcey, the magician who should have briefed him, is barely civil and has to help him anyway.
Read it ifYou want manners, a murder and magic in the same book, and you like a magician who is bad at magic.
DifferentEdwin is prickly on purpose and some readers never warm to him. The magic system takes up a lot of room, so this is closer to a fantasy novel with a romance in it than the other way round.

Warlock in Training
AboutAngus is training as a warlock in a system that works by stripping magic out of a parallel world, and the demon he summons has his own plans for him. Nichols writes the paranormal end of MM, which is a different thing again from secondary-world fantasy.
Read it ifYou want Australian MM that isn't contemporary and not realist, and you're willing to start a trilogy that runs to about 925 pages.
DifferentNot set in Australia and not trying to be. It's here because the author is Australian and because a page that only lists outback stations and small towns would be giving you a false picture of what Australians write. Reviews split on the leads: strong worldbuilding, and some readers never warm to either character.

AboutEzra is out. Anton has spent years becoming one of the best in the league without saying anything about who he is. They're rivals on the ice and in bed, repeatedly, and Anton turns out to have a possessive streak Ezra enjoys provoking.
Read it ifYou want hockey, high heat and low angst, and a long series to disappear into if it lands.
DifferentTwo Australians wrote it, Finley from Queensland, and it's American professional hockey from end to end. The spice starts early and doesn't let up. Book one of ten, so it's a shelf rather than a book.

Without You
AboutDeacon loses his brother, and then finds himself falling for the boyfriend his brother left behind. Grief romance, which is a harder sell than any other premise here and is presumably why it's also the one readers won't shut up about.
Read it ifYou want to be wrecked. This is the one on the list most likely to actually do it.
DifferentThe premise is the risk. Falling for your dead brother's partner either lands or it's too much, and which of the two depends entirely on your tolerance for grief in a romance. Deacon's family are the other hard part and they don't resolve the way some readers want them to. Valentine writes MF as well, so the backlist isn't all MM.

AboutOllie is a wolf shifter and an omega, lying low from his pack and working for a doctor who researches what omegas are. He meets Beck in a club. Beck finds out he is an alpha, which nobody has been for centuries, and that the two of them are already bonded.
Read it ifYou want omegaverse with the couple settled early and the trouble coming from outside them.
DifferentFated mates, so the attraction is decided on page one and the book is about everything else. Full omegaverse with mpreg, and the content notes cover kidnapping and infertility.

Not everything set here was written here. Look at what these three have in common: a sheep station, a Queensland farm, and the outback. Australia is one of the most urbanised countries on earth and almost nobody writes that from the outside. I've noted on each one whether the setting holds up, and where I don't know, I've said so.
The Station
AboutColin keeps Patrick off the gallows by admitting in open court that the two of them were lovers, and they're both transported to Australia for it. Out on a convict ship, and eventually onto a run in the outback with a chance to start again.

DifferentThe passage out is the part most historicals would skip and it's the part she does properly, so the first stretch is grim. The country comes through, hot and dry and full of things that will kill you, which is more than most outsiders manage. What you don't get is an Australian: both leads are sent here, so this is a book about the place happening to people rather than people of the place.

Why is there almost no Australian historical MM?
Contemporary Australian MM does perfectly well. Stations, small towns, Melbourne, Perth. Go looking for historical and the shelf is close to bare.
Historical MM means Regency England, then more Regency England, with the occasional American frontier for variety. Which is strange, because colonial Australia has everything the genre runs on and then some. Transportation. Isolation. Months of men stuck together with nowhere else to be. A legal system that could hang you for it. A frontier where nobody was watching anyway. All of it sitting there, barely touched.
That's where Marked by Fire sits. There are one or two others and The Station is the one worth your time, but none of them is the book I wanted to read. So I wrote it.

The Goodreads list of it runs to a hundred and thirty-three books, though the tail of that list is mostly under 3.7 with ratings in the low hundreds. Historical, almost none, which is a gap rather than a preference.
Are these books set in Australia or just written by Australians?
Both, and the page separates them, because plenty of Australian authors write American settings and some of the best-known Australian-set MM is by authors living elsewhere.
