MMM romance

The letters are a headcount. MM is two men, MMM is three, MMMM is four, and beyond that people tend to stop counting and just say poly.

Three is where it actually lives, and it gets shelved under two words that don't mean the same thing. Ménage is usually a threesome: something that happens and then stops. Poly is an arrangement people stay in. Plenty of books are sold as one and turn out to be the other.

Then there's the shape. Two of them together first and a third joining, or all three from the start. That decides more about how a book feels than the heat rating or the blurb will.

What the heat ratings mean

The five point scale romance readers already use, lowest to highest. Every book below is marked on it.

  1. Glimpses and kisses a kiss at most, and no sex on or off the page
  2. Behind closed doors it happens, but the door shuts first
  3. Open door at least one scene you are in the room for, written without the explicit words
  4. Explicit open door two or more scenes, explicit, and a range of things happening
  5. Explicit and plentiful several explicit scenes spread through the book

All three from the start

Nobody was together first, so nobody is the newcomer. There's far less of this than you'd expect.

AboutJonas Davenport comes home after four years away to open a gallery. Mace Calhoun is an ex-cop who kills guilty men for an underground syndicate, and he's sent to kill Jonas and can't do it. Cole Bridgerton is a Navy SEAL who needs Jonas for answers about the sister who ran away eight years ago. Then somebody tries to kill all three of them.
Read it ifYou want the equal one, and you want to be certain nobody gets left out of it.
DifferentThere isn't a single scene with only two of them in it. The usual complaint about MMM is that one of the three ends up an extra, and that structure makes it impossible.
SettingA man sent to kill an artist, and the soldier who needs him alive
HeatNot rated - no rating found, and the publisher flags it for mature readers
EndingHEA for all three.
SeriesFirst of the Protectors, which runs past ten books.
Rating4.05 on Goodreads, from 8,029 ratings
Fun factKennedy has published more than fifty books.

AboutTwo of them have the bedrooms. The third turns up after a housing emergency with nowhere else to go, and the couch is supposed to be temporary. Both of the others want him, and neither is willing to be the one who doesn't get him.
DifferentAll three from the start, so nobody arrives as a guest in somebody else's relationship. The one on the couch is wanted equally by both, which is the arrangement the genre keeps promising.
SettingA university share house, and a couch meant to last a fortnight
HeatExplicit and plentiful

A couple, and then a third

Two men are established and somebody joins them. This is most of the genre, and the question each of these has to answer is whether he ever stops being the new one.

Ella Frank

AboutRobert Bianchi is lonely and three margaritas in when he tells Julien Thornton and Joel Priestley exactly what he wants. The two of them have been together a while. Neither of them says no.
Read it ifYou want it filthy and you want the negotiation on the page rather than skipped over.
DifferentAll three narrate, so you get the arriving side and the settled side at the same time.
SettingChicago, and a couple who have already decided
HeatExplicit and plentiful - 5 of 5 on romance.io
EndingA small cliffhanger, and the three of them are nowhere near settled.
SeriesFirst of nine Confessions books, so it's a commitment. The HEA is across them rather than in this one.
Rating4.27 on Goodreads, from 8,816 ratings
Fun factThe three of them are the Princess, the Prick and the Priest, which is the title of the fourth book.

AboutTold in three parts across ten years. Josiah and Mateo meet as teenagers in foster care, and Mateo pushes him away because he has decided that's what protecting him looks like. Years later Josiah meets Tristan, a lawyer who feeds the birds on his morning walk, and the two of them build something slowly. Then Mateo comes back.
Read it ifYou want it to run over years rather than months, and you want the first love to come back rather than stay lost.
DifferentSequential rather than all at once: two separate love stories, then a third thing built out of both. Josiah is the one constant, and the other two are strangers to each other when it starts.
SettingA small town, and three men who came back to it
HeatExplicit and plentiful - 5 of 5 on romance.io
EndingHEA, and it takes the whole book.
SeriesFirst of three. Full Circle and Losing Control follow.
Rating4.13 on Goodreads, from 7,034 ratings
Fun factJosiah is an orphan, Mateo is a gang leader's son and Tristan is a lawyer who came up from nothing, so all three arrive from different directions.

AboutWilson Curtis has been outed publicly and dumped by the boyfriend who did it, so he goes on the holiday alone. Simon Stanford and Adam Preston are a couple, and they invite him into their bed for the night. Then for the rest of the week. Then for longer than that.
Read it ifYou've got an afternoon, you want it sunny, and you don't want anybody to suffer much.
DifferentShort, warm and it moves fast, so the two of them opening their relationship gets less argument than it probably would. Insta-love, which the tags say outright.

EndingHEA.

AboutTom Fearnes runs a restaurant and has loved Cass Pearson most of his life. Their relationship is already open, which is how Jake Thompson comes to wake up in Tom's bed and be told about it afterwards. Jake wants nothing to do with an arrangement. Then things go badly enough that he has to take Tom's help anyway.
Read it ifYou want the angsty British one, and you want the existing couple to have real problems of their own.
DifferentCass is the one who pushes them together. He loves Tom and has decided he hasn't got enough to give him, so Jake looks like a solution rather than a threat. Jake is much younger and has nothing, and the book doesn't pretend that's a level field.
SettingCamden Town, and a restaurant two of them run together
HeatExplicit and plentiful - 5 of 5 on romance.io
EndingHEA for all three.
SeriesFirst of two Urban Soul books.

AboutDan Wheeler's partner Justin was killed in a riding accident, and Dan still trains horses for Justin's parents because he can't think what else to do with himself. Then Evan Kaminski turns up to buy one for his sister, with his lover Jeff Stevens. Both of them want Dan, and Dan can't tell whether that means a third or a novelty.
Read it ifYou want the third man's doubt to be the plot rather than a wobble in chapter twenty.
DifferentDan's doubt is the plot rather than a wobble in the middle, and it takes nearly the whole book to settle. Evan runs hot and Jeff runs quiet, so Dan is reading two very different men for the same answer.
SettingA horse farm, and the couple who turn up to buy
HeatNot rated - no rating found
EndingHFN, with the three of them still working at it.
SeriesFirst of three plus a novella. Out of the Darkness follows.

Untitled founding novel

AboutVaelon has one gift and needs six. He picks five men out of five Houses, each carrying an ability his own family doesn't have, and not one of them ever learns that's why. Some of them love him first. Some just want him. Some are treaties. Some he takes. Every one of the five ends up loving him.
DifferentThe prequel, so it can be read first or last. Five separate stories about how each man arrived, because the choosing was the same every time and the getting never was.
SettingGenerations before the rest of the series, when there was no ruling House yet
HeatExplicit and plentiful

Read it ifYou want four rather than three, and you want the established couple to be the ones who needed it.
DifferentTwo arrive rather than one, so neither of them is ever the odd one out. Liam and Noah are stepbrothers, which is worth knowing before you start.
SettingA farmhouse in the country, and two brothers with nowhere to sleep

AboutVieno is an omega with a condition that turns a heat into something that could kill him. Palani, the beta reporter who has loved him since they were children, is already his and will do anything to keep him alive. Lidon is the alpha cop who gets him through one. Enar is the doctor drowning something out with work. Behind all four of them a government is coming apart and somebody is stealing from it.
Read it ifYou want omegaverse, you want mpreg, and you want four rather than three.
DifferentThe four of them aren't four yet. Book one gets them into the same house and into each other's way, and the foursome itself is book two, so this is the setup rather than the thing. Full omegaverse besides, so alphas, betas, omegas, heats and mpreg all arrive without explanation, and the political plot takes real room alongside the men.
SettingA country coming apart, and four men who need each other to get through it
HeatExplicit and plentiful - 5 of 5 on romance.io
EndingA soft cliffhanger, and not an HEA. The four of them aren't together yet when it closes.
SeriesFirst of ten Irresistible Omegas books. Alpha's Submission is next.
Rating4.12 on Goodreads, from 4,512 ratings
Fun factThe cover prints An MMMM Mpreg Romance under the title, so nobody arrives at it by accident.

Frequently asked questions

Is MMM romance the same as reverse harem?

No. Reverse harem is several men around one woman, and MMF is two men and a woman. MMM is three men, and the men are involved with each other rather than lined up next to somebody else. It matters when you're searching, because all three get filed under ménage and the tag alone won't tell you which one you're looking at.

Are Nothing Special and Special Delivery MMM?

No, though both turn up on MMM shelves constantly. A.E. Via's Nothing Special is God and Day, two detectives, and the rest of that series is pairs as well. Heidi Cullinan's Special Delivery is Sam and Mitch: Randy is in it as a character, but the three of them start in book two, Double Blind.

Which MMM romance should I read first?

Absolution if you want nobody left out, since no scene in it has only two of them. Three's Company if you want it short and sunny. Misfits if you want it angsty and British. Dark Horse if you want the third man's uncertainty to be the actual story. Four Ever if three isn't enough.

Do they all stay together at the end?

Yes, in all of them, though not always inside one volume. Robbie leaves the three of them still building it and Dark Horse ends hopeful rather than settled. The genre as a whole is less reliable about it, which is why the ending field on each of these says which you're getting.
