MM friends to lovers
The friendship has to be real first, long enough and close enough that saying something risks losing it rather than just being awkward. The stakes aren't "will he like me back", they're "what happens to the last ten years if this goes wrong". A book that skips straight to chemistry between strangers isn't running this trope, whatever the blurb says.
Heat and ending stated up front, and how long the friendship ran before the shift, because a book where two men have known each other three weeks isn't doing the same work as one where they've known each other since childhood.

What counts here
Three rules:
- A real friendship on the page, not backstory told in one paragraph. The reader needs to feel what's at risk, not just be told it exists.
- The turn has to cost something. If neither man risks the friendship by wanting more, the stakes this trope runs on are missing.
- Heat and ending stated plainly for every book. You shouldn't have to find out at chapter twenty.
What the heat ratings mean
The five point scale romance readers already use, lowest to highest. Every book below is marked on it.
- Glimpses and kisses a kiss at most, and no sex on or off the page
- Behind closed doors it happens, but the door shuts first
- Open door at least one scene you are in the room for, written without the explicit words
- Explicit open door two or more scenes, explicit, and a range of things happening
- Explicit and plentiful several explicit scenes spread through the book
How long the friendship ran matters more than the trope name suggests
Childhood friends carry the most weight and the most to lose: an entire shared history that a bad reaction could unravel. College or young-adult friendships run hotter and faster, usually with a clock already ticking on graduation or a season ending. Adulthood friendships are less common, and tend to run on something else entirely: a second chance, a widowhood, a life already half-built that has to make room. None of these is more legitimate than another, but they read differently, and the fields below name which one each book is running.
