That's the whole trope. The best of this shelf treats that power seriously rather than skipping past it, and the worst pretends it isn't there at all.

What counts here
Three rules:
- A real power difference or a real professional stake, not just an office as backdrop. If either man could walk away from the job with nothing at risk, this isn't that book.
- The imbalance has to be acknowledged on the page, even briefly. A boss and an employee who never once think about what the job means for the relationship is a workplace in name only.
- Heat and ending stated plainly for every book. You shouldn't have to find out at chapter twenty.

Boss and employee isn't the only shape this trope takes
Direct boss and employee is the sharpest of them, and what most of this shelf runs on: one man's job depends on the other's opinion of him. A hostile takeover or a rival company does something different, professional stakes without a direct reporting line, more chess match than servitude. And the softest of them, two coworkers at the same level, barely needs the word workplace at all, since the job mostly just explains why they're in the same room.
